Lasagna Ingredients

They adore this lasagna recipe because it's incredibly customizable, so you can easily alter the ingredient list to suit your needs. If you want to stay true to the original recipe, though, these are the ingredients you'll need to add to your grocery list:

  • Meat: This lasagna is packed with flavorful Italian sausage and lean ground beef.
  • Onion and garlic: The meat is cooked with an onion and two cloves of garlic to enhance the flavor.
  • Tomato products: You will require one can of crushed tomatoes, two cans of tomato sauce, and two cans of tomato paste.
  • Sugar: Two tablespoons of white sugar bring a delicate sweetness and improve the taste of the sauce.
  • Spices and seasonings: This lasagna recipe includes fresh parsley, dried basil leaves, salt, Italian seasoning, fennel seeds, and black pepper for flavor.
  • Lasagna noodles: You can use either store-bought or homemade lasagna noodles.
  • Cheeses: This lasagna becomes even more indulgent with the addition of Parmesan, mozzarella, and ricotta cheese.
  • Egg: An egg is used to hold the ricotta together, preventing it from leaking out of the lasagna when it is sliced.

Steps to Prepare Lasagna

Here's a quick summary of what you can anticipate when preparing lasagna from scratch:

  1. Prepare the meat sauce.
  2. Cook the noodles.
  3. Create the ricotta mixture.
  4. Assemble the lasagna as directed in the recipe.
  5. Cover with foil and bake.
  6. Allow the lasagna to rest before serving.

How to Layer Lasagna

  1. Meat sauce
  2. Noodles
  3. Ricotta mixture
  4. Mozzarella slices
  5. Meat sauce
  6. Parmesan cheese

The lasagna you prepared needs to be cooked in a preheated oven at 375 degrees F for approximately 50 minutes. For the first 25 minutes, cover it with foil, and then let it cook without the foil for the remaining 25 minutes. Before cutting into it, it's essential to allow the lasagna to rest at room temperature for around 15 minutes.

Tips

Pair it with garlic bread and a salad and you'll feel completely content.

Be warned: once you prepare this dish, you won't be able to settle for frozen lasagna anymore. Although it takes some time, it's not challenging. Every time I cook it, my house fills with a delightful aroma!

  • 2 cans canned tomato sauce ((6.5 ounce))
  • 5 cans tomato paste ((6 ounce))
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 4 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, divided
  • 1 ½ tablespoon dried basil leaves

  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ tablespoons fennel seeds
  • ¼ tablespoons ground black pepper
  • 12 lasagna noodlesv
  • 16 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
Instructions
  1. Gather all your ingredients

  2. In a Dutch oven, cook the sausage, ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until they are thoroughly browned.

  3. Combine crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and water, then mix well. Add sugar, 2 tablespoons of parsley, basil, 1 teaspoon of salt, Italian seasoning, fennel seeds, and pepper to the mixture. Cover and simmer for approximately 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.

  4. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook lasagna noodles in boiling water for 8 to 10 minutes. Drain noodles, and rinse with cold water.

  5. Incorporate the ricotta cheese, egg, 2 tablespoons of parsley, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a mixing bowl.

  6. Set the oven temperature to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) before use.

  7. In order to assemble, evenly distribute 1 1/2 cups of meat sauce on the base of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Place 6 noodles lengthwise over the meat sauce. Apply a layer of 1/2 of the ricotta cheese mixture. Follow this with 1/3 of the mozzarella cheese slices. Spoon 1 1/2 cups of meat sauce over the mozzarella and sprinkle 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese on top.

  8. Layer the ingredients again, and sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top. To avoid sticking, cover the dish with foil, making sure it doesn't come into contact with the cheese.

  9. Bake the mixture in the oven that has been preheated for 25 minutes. After that, take off the foil and continue baking for another 25 minutes.

  10. Allow the lasagna to rest for a duration of 15 minutes prior to serving.
