Description

A classic, rustic Irish Soda Bread made with simple ingredients—crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and ready in under an hour.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper or light grease.
  3. Mix flour, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  4. Create a well and add buttermilk; stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  5. Knead gently for 1 minute on a floured surface.
  6. Shape into a round loaf about 1.5 inches thick.
  7. Score a shallow cross on top.
  8. Bake 30–35 minutes until golden and hollow-sounding.
  9. Cool for 10 minutes before slicing; brush with melted butter if desired.

Notes

Avoid over-kneading to keep the loaf tender. Use cold buttermilk for the best rise.
