Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper or light grease.
- Mix flour, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
- Create a well and add buttermilk; stir until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead gently for 1 minute on a floured surface.
- Shape into a round loaf about 1.5 inches thick.
- Score a shallow cross on top.
- Bake 30–35 minutes until golden and hollow-sounding.
- Cool for 10 minutes before slicing; brush with melted butter if desired.
Notes
Avoid over-kneading to keep the loaf tender. Use cold buttermilk for the best rise.
