Description
This classic hamburger steak recipe delivers juicy ground beef patties smothered in rich caramelized onion gravy, bringing nostalgic diner-style comfort to your table in just 40 minutes.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup (240 ml) beef broth
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp olive oil
Instructions
- Place ground beef in a bowl, season with salt and pepper, and gently mix. Form into four 3/4-inch-thick patties.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat, add sliced onions, and cook for about 10 minutes until caramelized. Remove and set aside.
- Increase heat to medium-high. Sear patties for 4–5 minutes per side until a crust forms. Remove and tent with foil.
- Lower heat to medium, sauté garlic for 30 seconds, then whisk in flour. Slowly pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring until thickened. Return onions and patties to skillet and simmer 5 minutes.
Notes
For extra flavor, deglaze the pan with a splash of red wine before adding broth. Avoid overmixing the meat to keep patties tender.
