Description
This Ultimate Hot Irish Coffee Recipe blends authentic Irish tradition with modern technique to deliver a perfectly layered, soul-warming drink. Strong black coffee, smooth Irish whiskey, rich brown sugar, and lightly whipped cream create the signature contrast of hot and cool that defines this classic cocktail.
Ingredients
- 6 oz hot freshly brewed black coffee (medium or dark roast)
- 1 1/2 oz Irish whiskey
- 2 tsp light brown sugar
- 2 tbsp heavy cream (minimum 35% fat), lightly whipped
- Pinch of fresh nutmeg (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat a heatproof glass mug by filling it with hot water for 60 seconds; discard water.
- Brew 6 oz strong black coffee at 195–205°F for optimal flavor extraction.
- Pour hot coffee into the warmed mug. Stir in brown sugar until fully dissolved, then add Irish whiskey.
- Lightly whip heavy cream until thick but still pourable.
- Float the cream on top by slowly pouring it over the back of a spoon.
- Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg if desired and serve immediately.
Notes
Use heavy cream with at least 35% fat to ensure proper floating. Avoid over-whipping the cream—aim for a thick, pourable consistency to achieve clean layers.
